Audrey's 1st book club

For Audrey's birthday last year she was given a very creative gift...a book club basket. In the basket was all the items necessary to have a book club (4 copies of the same book, discussion questions, game/craft supplies that connected with the theme, a box of cookie mix, frosting, and even party favors). Since the book, Frindle by Andrew Clements, was set at the beginning of a school year, Audrey asked four friends on the first week of school if they would like to join her for a book club. They met last Sunday afternoon to discuss the book. They started by mixing the cookie dough and cutting them out to bake. Next was the discussion time. It was very cute to see Audrey "run" her bookclub (leading from the red chair with all the girls on the other side of the room), asking questions and fielding answers. Being 9 and 10 year old girls that all love to read, they discussed for over 30 minutes! After the discussion they did their craft, a letter to one of their favorite teachers telling them all they'd learned in their class (if you've read the book, you know how that fits in perfectly), and then snack time...they decorated their freshly baked cookies, made lemonade, and enjoyed the last few minutes at the table discussing what book they wanted to read next, and at whose house they'd meet. So grown up!

Another news-worthy event in the house included Violet losing a tooth (her third, top-right-middle). She actually got it "bumped" out by her friend, Jackson. But, no worries, it was REALLY wiggly already! Unlike her last tooth, she put it under the pillow. And the tooth fairy remembered to come! No rain or fog delays, or a back-up caused by too many children losing their teeth in one day (yes, we have used those excuses before...and more). There was a whole dollar bill waiting for her in the morning! Hooray!

As a lover of books and book clubs, that gift idea is the COOLEST! Glad Audrey enjoyed the experience- what's the next book?! :) (Frindle is a perfect choice for 5th grade... did you know it's actually part of our leveled readers curriculum?)
