This past week, Isaac tested for his blue belt. He has been studying Shito-Ryu karate since this past February and was very excited to finally know everything needed to advance from white to blue belt. He was required to come early on a Saturday morning and perform four katas (a routine of steps/blocks/punches) as well as recite some basic information about karate and some Japanese vocabulary in front of Sensei Quitoriano and 2 other sempai. Here he is performing one of his katas. The following week at the beginning of class he was awarded a certificate and his new belt! He was very proud of himself! And we are really proud of him! Grandma Arlene came to see him get his belt, as well as Auntie Christa, Charlotte, and Levi (he actually started studying karate with a gift certificate from them last Christmas). His karate studies have been a great outlet for him! He is learning to focus, to use his muscles in a precise way, to respect this teachers and classmates, and all in a very fun, active environment! Randy and I have been so impressed with Sensei Quitoriano and his dojo! He is always very clear that the intent of karate is to improve your mind and your body, and that your skills should never be used outside the dojo. We hope that Isaac can study under Sensei Q. for quite some time! Audrey and Levi watching Isaac's class.
