As the kids get older, our birthday celebrations have changed with their ages. This year, with Audrey being gone from home a lot between school, homework and swim team (a normal progression as she gets older and older), we chose to celebrate a couple ways...(1) Audrey had a date-night with her dad, a very special treat considering how precious one-on-one time is in a big family. (2) Audrey wanted to go with a few friends to see Cinderella in the movie theater, so the Saturday after her birthday we had the girls over to our house for a few games and brownies, and then headed out for the movie, but not before getting Audrey all dressed up! I had secretly told her friends to bring something "golden" for Audrey to wear out on the town (being as it was her golden birthday...she turned 14 on the 14th) and her friends did not disappoint! She felt completely and thoroughly loved (and maybe a bit embarrassed) by all the wonderful attention! But what junior higher isn't mostly embarrassed by their mom all the time anyway, right? She had a super-fun night and felt very special when it was all said and done.
Isaac's birthday comes a quick 4 weeks after Audrey's. He also wanted a small celebration with friends and chose to spend an afternoon at the local laser tag arena. Randy and some of the other dads joined in as well for a fun few hours, playing with their boys!
We also celebrated as a family with Grandma and Uncle over dinner at Ginza and some ice cream sundaes. I can't help but look at these pictures and reflect on how thankful I am as a parent that my children are surrounded with such good friends! The teen years can be rough, but good friends can make the road seem easier. I pray that my kids continue to grow in their friendships over the coming years and feel blessed to share yet another year of birthday celebrations with friends and family!
