Fig Fest 2008

A not so normal part of our routine was going to the 5th Annual Fig Fest this past Saturday, held on the Fresno State campus. Randy was gone all morning picking up some kids from summer camp (he will be leading the 5th/6th grade activities at church this year, so this was a fun way to get to know them better before the school year started). My friend Christa was also parenting solo that morning (her husband works most Saturday mornings), so we decided to brave it together. It was great! Fig Fest is a celebration centered around the fig (duh!), but also a commitment to locally grown, sustainably farmed food (sponsored by Slow Food Madera). There was live music, cooking demos, a science table for the kids...but we never even got to that because we were too busy tasting at the 20 plus tables hosted by local farms and restaurants. When you entered you were given a ballot to vote for your favorite food item (all original recipes that included one or more types of figs). Everyone left happy and full; we managed to find something for everyone! Our favorite? Christa and I agreed...the sourdough toast, topped with fresh tomato, basil leaves, goat cheese, pine nuts, a bar-b-qued mission fig, and drizzled with balsalmic vinegar. WOW! The kids' fave? I think they unanimously decided on the Fig ice cream, made by Fresno State University.

I've never heard of Fig Fest. Looks/sounds like it was a lot of fun.
