Weekend at the beach!

Well, since Audrey has started school, the option of a vacation any time we like is no longer available. We have to stick to school schedules now. So...with Audrey having this Monday off, we planned a weekend at the beach with Randy's mom and brother. We hadn't gone out of town on vacation since August...and the last time we've gone on vacation that's not camping in the mountains is...um...let me think...I know we've done it before...well, you get the point. The whole time we were driving Friday night Isaac kept saying, "We're almost to camp"..."I see the mountains"... which yes, you do drive over the mountains, but his few experiences with vacations told him that we were going camping. We stayed in a house within walking distance to Seacliff Beach (just south of Santa Cruz). Saturday was rainy, windy and cold, and we were a little worried that we wouldn't get to enjoy the beach. We walked down to the beach that morning anyways, and Audrey, Isaac, and Randy enjoyed running in the waves and getting soaked in the rain! It was too wet for the camera, however, and we didn't get any pictures of it. The rain cleared for the rest of the weekend though, and we enjoyed driving to Natural Bridges State Park on Sunday to see the monarch butterflies. They winter in a eucalyptus grove there from about October to February...but they'd already migrated on. We saw maybe 3 or 4 total. At the right time of year, you can see thousands of them clinging to the branches in the grove...it's amazing! I remember being there as a kid. Well, maybe next year. We enjoyed the beach there and a picnic lunch. The weather was still a little windy to go out to the tide pools there (plus with Violet in the jogger stroller one of us would have to stay behind...no fun)...so, again, another reason to go back next winter. We enjoyed the beach near our house again that afternoon...and again one more time Monday morning before packing up to head home. Violet really got a chance to enjoy the beach on Monday, as you can see from the pictures.Randy and Isaac searcing for rocks...to throw of course.Violet loves it!This past week Violet decided she was finally ready to start walking. She'd taken a couple steps here and there over the last month, but this week it was walking all the time...although with lots of tumbles. Way to hang on to the shells though, Vi!Thanks Grandma for planning a fun weekend at the beach!
