Isaac update
Just wanted to pass on the good news that Isaac's blood work results came back this week and his thyroid levels are in the "normal" category! For those of you who don't know, Isaac was diagnosed with hypothyroid when he was born. He has been on a thyroid supplement since he was 8 days old and has gone in for blood tests at Children's Hospital every few weeks for his whole life. His levels, however, have always been borderline. His levels were just below normal when he was born, but with all the brain development that is dependent on the thyroid in the first 3 years of life, the doctors did not want to take any chances. The hopeful news through these three years has been that 20% of children within those levels grow out of needing supplements. Isaac does have a thyroid gland (and pituitary gland...they work together) and it does work, just not as well as it should. So, after Isaac's 3rd birthday, we went from 1 pill a day (what he's taken for the last 3 years) to 1/2 a pill (the smallest possible dose)...and then followed with blood work after 8 weeks. His tests showed "normal" levels, so we took him off his pills completely a month ago. He went in for blood work about a week and a half ago and the tests just came back, showing "normal" levels...hooray! His endocrinologist at Children's said it usually takes a full 8-10 weeks for his levels to show the full effect of being off his meds, and he may have to go back on for a while to help them even out, but it looks like he may not have to ever go back on his pills. Although this is not a life-threatening condition, and taking one pill every morning would not be a big deal, we a very grateful to God that Isaac will not have to worry about this during his adult life. We are also so thankful for the amazing care that Isaac has received at Children's Hospital over the past 3 years! Thank you for those of you who have prayed for Isaac over the years!
