End of summer bounty

As we say goodbye to farm fresh peaches and colorful heirloom tomatoes, we had an end of summer feast! I made a batch of pizza dough and let the kids each roll out their own pizzas and choose their own toppings. Violet's crust was the thickest, topped with tomato sauce, canadian bacon, Green Zebra and Brandywine tomatoes and smoked goat cheese (naturally lactose-free, Violet has come to choose goat cheese as her favorite).

Audrey's pizza had a well-rolled-out crust, topped with tomato sauce, pepperoni, fresh Brandywine and yellow Limmony tomatoes and mozarella cheese. Isaac rolled his dough large and thin, into the shape of a duck (that actually resembled a horse) that had to be cut in two to even fit on his plate, topped with tomato sauce, pepperoni, olives, and mozarella.

What did I choose for my toppings? Home-made pesto from local Purple Opal basil, Limmony, Green Zebra, and Brandywine heirloom tomatoes, and mozarella and Serena farmstead cheese (made at Three Sisters dairy in Lindsay, CA). YUM!!! We enjoyed our dinner...and the last week of summer as we planted our fall garden and even went swimming a couple times to stay cool in the near 100 degree heat. Goodbye summer. Bring on the fall!

Adaptive ski clinic

Although I haven't updated the blog in a while, we have had quite a few things happening...just not everything has pictures to go with it. The first week of September included an "emergency" trip to the dentist for Audrey (everything is now fine...we successfully retrieved the broken piece of tooth from the bottom of the pool, placed it in a glass of milk on the way to the dentist's, and had it "glued" back in place), a wonderful block BBQ on Sunday night before Labor Day (about 30 of our neighbors came out to enjoy the cool weather, bar-b-qued ribs and chicken, and good company), and a relaxing Monday off from school and work! Here's Isaac and Violet having fun in the front yard with their skateboard and scooter!
This past weekend Randy helped with Children's Hospital's 2nd annual Adaptive Ski Clinic. Held at Wolf Lakes, the clinic is for disabled people of all ages in the community to come and have a fun day of skiing, being aided by the correct equipment, and trained staff. It was very rewarding to give my kids the opportunity to interact with disabled kids their own age, having fun on the lake together! I was also filled with a deep pride, watching my husband "at work" and interacting with some of his past and current patients. I can see how much he loves doing what he does, working diligently at Children's Hospital, and making a difference in many kids' lives. Here's a few pictures from the day! Megahn, on OT at Children's, waiting in the water to help kids onto their ski. Randy and Isaac out on the dock. Randy setting someone up in the ski "cage" before taking off. You'll notice the goggles on Randy's forehead. Often times, Randy would hang on to the back of the ski (dragging) as the boat took off to keep the rider steady and balanced until they were up and going. As you can imagine, Randy's arms were pretty sore the next day. Audrey on a jet ski with Herb and Meg. Megahn was a "jumper" for part of the day, meaning she rode on the back of a jet ski behind a boat pulling a skier. The jumper was always ready to get in and help the skier back onto their ski if they fell off mid-run. Isaac got a chance to ride a jet-ski during the day too. Audrey rode a second time with just Herb (a very skilled rider from Clausen Honda watersports) and they got up to 70 miles an hour! You could hear Audrey's elated screaming all across the lake. Violet got to ride in the back of the Crocker's boat with her buddy Tatum. Dr. Jen Crocker is the Rehab. director that envisioned this clinic happening. Her husband drove their boat and her four kids were out at the lake with our kids for the day too! It was a great day...one that my kids will be talking about for quite a while!
